Coral branches
- Name given by fishermen mainly due to the branch-like form of the corals. Due to their shape and consistency, they are sometimes even confused with plants. These types of corals are found in waters 1 to 10 meters deep. The predominance of the branch-like form over other forms (rounded and flat) and their soft consistency contrary to the stony consistency of other corrals, is due to the presence of strong currents and waves. Whereas the rigid and massive structures would easily break under these circumstances, the branch-like structures sway to the rhythm of the currents without suffering any harm. Some of the fish that inhabit this area are the Latin Grunt (Haemulon steindachneri), Black Angelfish (Pomacanthus paru), Scorpionfish (Scorpaena brasiliensis), Tomtate (Haemulon aurolineatum), and mainly in Venezuela, la vieja (old lady) (Paralabrax dewegeri).
