Communication system

  • The odontoceti can emit high frequency sounds that permit them to locate objects.
  • The sounds are produced inside and then emitted like a beam of light from the upper part of their head, also called the "melon".
  • The sounds move very quickly through the water, hit against objects, and bounce back. The vibrations, instead of being received directly by the ear, pass through the lower jaw and from there to the inner ear.
