"Palangre" or setline

  • The setline is a fixed type of fishing tackle consisting of a horizontal cord known as the "mother line", to which the gangions are attached. Gangions are short lengths of lines that bear the hooks, which vary in type and size depending on the type of fish being caught. These setlines can be of the floating type used for catching pelagic species, such as tuna and some species of shark, or the bottom type used to catch demersal species, such as rays, dogfish, etc. Generally the hooks are baited with sardine or herring. Some setlines are many kilometers long. Today, artisanal setlines are used less than they were a few years ago, because it is not always easy to obtain the right bait and because it takes a lot of time to bait a long setline. They are still used, however, for some species such as marlin, needlefish and swordfish (Xiphias gladius).
